| Mum's got this Hugh Fearnley-Whitting-persons book. "River Cottage Everyday." Its got some very nice recipes in it. Our first foray (or rather, Mum's first recipe; she did the cooking) was the honey and peanut booster bars. The recipe had a bit of a hammering because I don't like fruit and Mum is lactose intolerant; so the fruit got replaced with more seeds and oats, and the butter had to be replaced with Mum's margarine. The result would likely have set better with the butter, hence we got sixteen squares rather than bars, but it tastes gorgeous. There was also difficulty in weighing the honey and peanut butter; experience will translate the weights in to getting the feel with the tablespoon. The added thing here is that the nuts give a good protein boost while the oats help fill the stomach. These are great as a snack; much better than those bars that I used to buy when I was in a hurry. The downside to this is that because of the cost of the seeds, you need to be making many of these to get the cost back. You also need to eat plenty of them as well, or have a large family, because I can't see these lasting a week. Mind you, with the taste of this first batch, I have to admit that these are unlikely to make it beyond a few days ... but that is another story. Great book; worth grabbing hold of. |
